About MetaRock

Engineered, Manufactured and Tested in Houston

MetaRock Laboratories has designed and built custom specialty core analysis and rock mechanics systems from Houston since 1996, engineered to hold up at reservoir temperature and pressure. Mechanical design, electrical engineering, control software and the testing itself all happen under one roof.

That last part matters. Our own lab runs the same systems we ship, so every design decision has already been argued out over a real core, a real pressure vessel and a real deadline before it reaches a client's bench.

Rock and fluid testing technology, designed and proven in our own laboratory.

What we do

Engineering, manufacturing and testing under one roof

Six disciplines that normally sit with six different vendors. We keep them together so a system arrives finished, certified and supported by the people who built it.

Mechanical engineering

ASME-code pressure vessels, high-load frames and flow pumps, designed in-house and reviewed against the P&ID before anything goes to the machine shop.

Electrical engineering

UL-certified control systems, temperature controllers and over-limit safety shutdown, including for HPHT SCAL equipment.

Automation software

Process control and data acquisition software developed by our own team, so the instrument and its interface are designed together.

SCAL technology development

Continuous development aimed at special core analysis, with a focus on unconventional reservoirs and measurements that were previously out of reach.

Testing services

A full rock mechanics and SCAL testing service. Running the work ourselves makes us the end user of our own technology, and the first to find its limits.

Geomechanics consulting

Interpretation and advisory work across wellbore stability, EOR/IOR studies and reservoir characterization, supported by lab data rather than models alone.

Company timeline

Major milestones since 1996

1996

Company established

Founded around software engineering, automation and process control. The scope extended quickly into the design and manufacture of SCAL equipment for rock mechanics studies.

2001

Rock mechanics

Substantial growth through an in-situ conversion R&D program, adding consultants, engineers, technicians, manufacturing and a core testing SCAL facility. Primary focus: rock mechanics at temperatures up to 450 °C.

2010

Unconventional focus

An exclusive technology agreement redirected the company toward unconventional reservoirs: anisotropic mechanical property determination, steady-state flow measurement down to 1 nD, and frac design applications.

2014

New lab construction

Completed a purpose-built laboratory at 2703 Hwy 6 South, bringing SCAL technologies back in-house and consolidating manufacturing and testing on a single site.

2018

CE certification

Specialty core analysis equipment manufactured to CE requirements for installation in Europe and Asia, opening international markets. Development in the same period targeted rock mechanics and flow studies at full reservoir pressure and temperature.

2019

Houston technology center

Opened a dedicated technology center in Houston focused on Gulf of Mexico research studies.

2021

CO2 testing

Major development in CO2 testing capability, laying the groundwork for our current CCUS work.

2022

Sand control and acoustics

Rock mechanics systems extended with sand control capability and real-time acoustic monitoring during the test.

2023

Mud testing development

Major development in mud compatibility and wellbore cementing, with newly designed systems created to address complex mud-related issues.

2024

Three-phase and caprock

Advanced rock mechanics systems delivered alongside a three-phase relative permeability system and a caprock integrity system, extending the range into storage and containment work.
