Micro CT Rock Mechanics

CT Scanner Triaxial System for Rock Core Analysis

The Micro-CT Mini Triaxial System performs triaxial testing simultaneously with Micro-CT scanning of a core sample inside the pressure vessel. X-ray transparent materials and optimized source-to-sample distances maximize CT image resolution during testing. Designed for the ThermoFisher HeliScan™ Micro CT, with flexible mounting for other models.

APPLICATIONS

Primary Applications

  • Understanding rock behavior at the microscopic level under triaxial stress conditions and pore pressure
  • Real-time Micro-CT imaging during triaxial deformation to visualize crack initiation and fracture propagation
  • Ultrasonic velocity measurement (P, S1, S2) during triaxial loading for rock physics characterization
  • Resistivity monitoring during testing to characterize fluid saturation and flow behavior
  • Pore pressure control and fluid flow experiments — brine, mineral oil, and water injection
  • Multi-stage automated triaxial test programs for Oil & Gas, Mining, and Geotechnical applications
SAFETY

Safety Requirements

  • All personnel must read this procedure before starting operation
  • Safety glasses and gloves must always be worn while working on the system
  • Only operate the unit if the Process Engineering Flow Schemes are fully understood
  • Relevant safety signs must be displayed in and around the operation area at all times
  • All vessels/equipment are equipped with rupture disks as primary pressure protection
  • Instrumental safeguards are described in the cause-and-effect diagram
