Helium pressure and grain volume plotted against time during a porosimeter measurement

Routine Core Analysis

Porosity and Grain Density

Porosity is the basic petrophysical measurement underpinning any reservoir evaluation. We determine grain volume by helium expansion and report the full set of derived volume and density properties.

What you receive

  • Grain volume and grain density
  • Bulk volume and bulk density
  • Pore volume
  • Unstressed porosity
  • Stressed pore volume (optional)
  • Grain volume is determined by the helium expansion method.
  • With sample length, diameter and weight entered, grain volume, grain density, bulk volume, bulk density, pore volume and porosity are calculated and recorded automatically.
  • Bulk volume measured by Archimedes principle can be entered instead, and the same derived properties are returned.
  • Thermal control minimises temperature effects, and multiple gas calibration with low-leakage metal diaphragm valves keeps errors down.
  • Standard sample sizes are 1 inch diameter by 2 inches length and 1.5 inch by 3 inch; other sizes can be accommodated on request.
  • Tight gas sands and shales, where the highest precision is required, are run on research-grade configuration.
